The role of the arch in architecture and the purity of geometry was the inspiration behind Tim Rundle’s Michelle collection. From an initial release of mirrors, the collection now also includes high and low back dining chairs and stools in a glamourous selection of metal finishes, fabrics and marble.
Building on the success of the Michelle mirror series, Tim Rundle has developed the visual language of the arc to create seating that is an exercise in architectural geometry. On its own, a single Michelle chair makes a bold style statement, the variously oval or round backs and circular bases set upon fine tubular steel frames to create sculptural shapes in space.
Background
Tim Rundle is a London based Industrial Designer with experience across furniture, lighting, consumer products and transport. Prior to forming his own studio in 2015, he led the product design teams at Tom Dixon and Conran & Partners.
The work of Tim Rundle Studio is driven by context, with a focus on the design of products and systems that exist at the intersection between architecture and its inhabitants, as well as research driven consultancy projects in materials and manufacturing. A preoccupation with simplicity, improvement and the pragmatic application of creativity; combined with a rigorous and knowledgeable approach to the technical aspects of industrial production leads to results that are, at the same time, useful, engaging and relevant.
Experience
Tim graduated from the School of Architecture and Design at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He then began working for Auckland based consultancy Formworks Design where, among other projects, he worked on the concept for Air New Zealand’s ground breaking seating products ‘skycouch’ and ‘spaceseat’. In 2008 he relocated to London and was employed by the design consultancy Priestmangoode. He then went on to work for renowned British designer Tom Dixon, where he was head designer of the furniture and lighting design team. Prior to setting up his own studio in 2015 Tim was the Design Director for Product design at Conran and Partners, the multidisciplinary design studio founded by Sir Terence Conran.
